Ahearn Schopfer & Associates was commissioned to prepare a long range renovation plan for the existing building housing the College of General Studies. This renovation was to include a general building upgrade, new expanded library/computer center, new entry/gathering room, and new facades. The exterior program focused on transforming the bland 1960’s façade into a sophisticated and engaging design to serve the next generation of students. Without removing large masses of concrete slabs, Ahearn Schopfer & Associates proposed an outer sheathing of perforated metal panels which would reduce sun glare (without obstructing views) and blend the building’s idiosyncratic vocabulary into a fresh, clean palette. This palette is further defined by expanses of wood and brick which are consistent with the established B.U. design criteria. The lobby interior was faced with a series of shafts and stairs indiscriminately colliding into the ground floor. Our design sought to reconcile this situation by enclosing them in large tubes. This created a variety of gathering areas and softened the lobby’s demeanor. The lobby continued this gesture with a new generously arching room configuration.
